SBMSA Girls Lacrosse in the News

Who We Are

About SBMSA Girls Lacrosse

SBMSA Girls Lacrosse is a great opportunity for kids of all ages to learn the sport of lacrosse and to compete at various levels. We offer everything from skills development and training, to an in-house league geared towards creating a fun and exciting environment for beginners and experienced players, along with a competitive league for more experienced players.

Fall Ball

Fall Ball is off-season training for girls in 4th – 8th grades. This is an opportunity for kids to get coaching and skills training during the lacrosse off-season. The program typically runs from October to December of each year.

Spring – 1st and 2nd Grade Clinics

Clinic-only program aimed to introduce 1st & 2nd grader girls to the game of lacrosse. Players will be introduced to basic lacrosse skills and play fun games during these clinics led by professional coaches. There are usually 3 – 4 clinics that are offered in January.

Spring – House 7v7 League (Includes uniform)

The Spring 7v7 League is an “in-house” league open to girls in 3rd – 8th grades. Field size and team sizes are smaller to give players more reps, more creativity and more fun. This league is designed to develop the skills of all players from beginners to experienced players while allowing them to compete in a more structured team format.

7v7 House League begins with optional clinics in January led by volunteer coaches. There are no tryouts. Teams are formed by the commissioner in February and team practices start soon after. There are 7 to 9 games during the season depending on the number of teams formed. Most games are played weekly on Sunday afternoons. Team practice days and times are set by each volunteer coach.

Spring – Dragons (Includes uniform)

The SBMSA Dragons play in a competitive league against teams in the greater Houston area. Registration is open to girls in 5th – 8th grades. The Dragons are members of the Greater Houston Girls Youth Lacrosse Association (GHGYLA). This program is 12v12 with goalies on a larger field and is designed to help increase the skills of more competitive players while also giving less experienced players a glimpse of what the games and format is like for High School Lacrosse. SBMSA Dragon sis 12v12 with goalies on a larger field and is designed for experienced players.

Games are played on weekdays and weekends at various locations throughout the city. Bi-weekly practices start in January and are twice weekly at SBEC.

Tryouts will be held for one 5/6 team and two 7/8 Dragons select teams. Up to 18 higher-skilled players will be selected to play for the above-mentioned teams. Girls selected for the Dragons team are highly encouraged to also play in the 7v7 House League.

Tryout information for both 5/6 (12U) and 7/8 (14U) teams can be found below.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Lacrosse is a fast-paced sport that incorporates the finesse of soccer, the footwork of basketball and the hand-eye coordination of hockey. When young girls are introduced to the concept of shooting, their eyes light up!

Games are approximately one hour long, and have a running clock. Teams field 11 players plus a goalie. Field positions include Midfielder (Middies), Attackers, and Defenders. It is a fast paced game, and our officials do explain whistles to the players as they occur. Players are grouped by age (U10, U12, and U14).

Lacrosse is an outdoor spring sport. We begin fall ball in October-December, and the season starts in January and continues through April. Typically we practice every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30pm-8:00pm.

At the 5th /6th grade level, there are tryouts to play on our competitive team. If you child does not make Dragons, they are invited to play on our House League, which has scrimmages each Sunday.

Yes! The girls are split up based off skill level.

We try to keep friend groups together as much as we can, however we also want to make sure the teams are fair.

You can put a request in and we can try to accommodate.

You will need a stick, googles, and a mouth guard at all times.

We have limited sticks/googles to borrow for the first practice if needed.

Our practices are held at Pine Shadows Elementary during the fall, and SBEC Fields in the spring. Home games are played at either SBEC fields or Grob Stadium.

We play teams all throughout the district. In the fall we have 1 tournament (Burning Flower) that is held in Hockley, and the 7th /8th grade teams have a 1 tournament at the end of January (Aggieland Classic) that is held in College Station, Texas.

As an organization, we know the importance of balance and encourage our players to be well-rounded students, athletes, and artists. We DO NOT require our players to choose between activities. We simply ask that you RSVP to practices and games, so that we know who will be attending.

At the 5th /6th grade level each player is given a practice pennie, which is also to be worn to games. At the 7th /8th grade level, we provide each player with a uniform. This is provided at no cost to you. We only ask that you take care of it during the year and return it in good condition at the end of the season.

Registration fees for the 2022-2023 fall ball season is TBD. Registration for spring season is TBD.
