About SBMSA Girls Lacrosse
SBMSA Girls Lacrosse is a great opportunity for kids of all ages to learn the sport of lacrosse and to compete at various levels. We offer everything from skills development and training, to an in-house league geared towards creating a fun and exciting environment for beginners and experienced players, along with a competitive league for more experienced players.
Fall Ball
Fall Ball is off-season training for girls in 3rd – 8th grades. This is an opportunity for kids to get coaching and skills training during the lacrosse off-season. The program typically runs from September to November of each year.
Spring – House League (Includes uniform)
The Spring 2025 we will begin playing a version of 6s in Spring Branch House League. The House League will be open to girls in K-8 th grade Field size and team sizes are smaller to give players more reps, more creativity and more fun. This league is designed to develop the skills of all players from beginners to experienced players while allowing them to compete in a more structured team
format.
The House League begins with optional clinics in January led by volunteer coaches. There are no tryouts. Teams are formed by the commissioner in January and team practices start soon after. We will play up to 10 games depending on weather, the number of teams formed and the interest of other programs in playing interleague games. formed. Most games are played weekly on Sunday afternoons. Our goal is to provide 1 skills practice a week across the
entire age group.
Spring – Dragons (Includes uniform)
The SBMSA Dragons play in a competitive league against teams in the greater Houston area. Registration is open to girls in 5th – 8th grades. The Dragons are members of the Greater Houston Girls Youth Lacrosse Association (GHGYLA).
This program is 12v12 with goalies on a larger field and is designed to help increase the skills of more competitive players while also giving less experienced players a glimpse of what the games and format is like for High School Lacrosse. SBMSA Dragons is designed for experienced players. Games are typically played on Saturdays, but may also be played during the week for scheduling purposes. Bi-weekly practices are twice weekly at either SBEC or other SWMS starting as early as December. The GHGYLA End of Season Tournament will be played.
Tryouts will be held for 5/6 team and 7/8 Dragons select teams. All players who wish to play dragons will need to sign up for the House League (6s) and indicate that they would like to try out for Dragons. The number of teams will be based on tryouts and the number of girls trying out and our ability to schedule games for the players. Tryouts will be in December.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Lacrosse is a fast-paced sport that incorporates the finesse of soccer, the footwork of basketball and the hand-eye coordination of hockey. When young girls are introduced to the concept of shooting, their eyes light up!
Games are approximately one hour long, and have a running clock. Teams field either 5 or 11 players plus a goalie. Field positions include Midfielder (Middies), Attackers, and Defenders. It is a fast-paced game, and our officials do explain whistles to the players as they occur. Players are grouped by age (U8, U10, U12, and U14).
Lacrosse is an outdoor spring sport. We begin fall ball in September-November. Typically we practice every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30pm-8:00pm. In the Spring, the season starts in January with practices on Wednesdays and games on Fridays and Sundays ending in April.
At the 5th-8th grade levels there are tryouts to play on our competitive Dragon’s team. Trying out is optional. However, all players that tryout will automatically be given a spot in our House league for 6s and will be required to play, whether they make one of the competitive teams or not.
Yes! The girls are split up based off skill level.
We try to keep friend groups together as much as we can, however we also want to make sure the teams are fair.
You can put a request in and we can try to accommodate.
You will need a stick, googles, and a mouth guard at all times.
Lacrosse Unlimited is a great resource.
We have limited sticks/googles to borrow for the first practice if needed.
Our practices are held at Pine Shadows Elementary during the fall, and SBEC Fields, SWMS and WAIS in the spring. Home games are played at either SBEC fields or Grob Stadium.
We play teams all throughout the district. In the fall we have 1 tournament (Burning Flower) that is held in Hockley in December, and the 7th /8th grade teams have a 1 tournament at the end of January (Aggieland Classic) that is held in College Station, Texas.
As an organization, we know the importance of balance and encourage our players to be well-rounded students, athletes, and artists. We DO NOT require our players to choose between activities. We simply ask that you RSVP to practices and games, so that we know who will be attending.
All levels will be provided a uniform or penny. This is provided at no cost to you. We only ask that you take care of it during the year and return it in good condition at the end of the season.
Registration fees for the 2022-2023 fall ball season is $300. Registration for the spring season is $300 that includes the registration for House and the ability to try out for Dragons. If your player makes the select team the cost is an additional $300.
